Welcome to the new Governor Page!

This page is created and kept up-to-date by the governors of the nursery, and allows direct communication from governors to you.

Following our consecutive Outstanding grading by Ofsted, governors resolved that they must push forward and that school would not rest on achievements already made. Here at Hylton Red House Nursery School, governors feel their role is much more than statutory compliance and words on paper.  Along with Catherine, the Headteacher, governors want to share with you what they do and more importantly, why.

In an ever changing educational environment and increased budget pressures, schools need to be ever changing and adaptable.  Here at Hylton Red House Nursery School governors embrace change and create the future our children deserve.

Governors understand that children may spend only a short amount of time at nursery school, but attendance is vitally important so that children gain as much experience as possible to enable them to flourish in Foundation Stage as well as Key Stage 1 and beyond. From the basics of Catherine manning the Nursery door when you arrive,  and that every day you have the opportunity to chat to key workers, to the identified Parent Champion members of staff,  parent workshops, Stay and Play sessions and regular events (as reported to all in the school newsletter and school app) these procedures and routines relay how children thrive and develop, so that you can rest assured children are in a safe and secure learning environment.

The school has recently become the first school in Sunderland to sign up to the 'Employer Pledge' which demonstrates a commitment to look after staff mental health and wellbeing - which in turn benefits children to be happy and supported throughout their time in the setting.

Governors and staff are devoted to children achieving their best possible outcomes by ensuring children receive an enriching curriculum both inside and outside of the school. From the schools ample outside learning spaces, to community visits and special visitors who attend the school to enhance children’s vision of the world and help them to appreciate modern British Values and an inclusive ethos.

Parents may be forgiven in thinking that this little school likes to play and simply look after children. Yes, it does, however, it also collaborates with the other eight maintained nursery schools in Sunderland and is involved in Primary Headteacher meetings, school cluster group meetings, Triad partnerships and has input into local commissioning through working partnerships with various health and educational organisations - which leads to children receiving accurate assessments, access to the most up to date and effective learning methods and facilitates children transitioning into primary phase. In essence, the school ensures that children get off to the best possible start in life.

Governors hold the school to account in all these areas and more. The Governing Board consists of Miss Barnett, a Local Councillor, another current Nursery School Headteacher, a former School Improvement Officer (and Headteacher), a school governance professional, a financial professional, a member of school staff and parents.  Although sometimes this role can seem daunting, Parent Governors make up a valuable part of the Governing Board and this is open to any parent without exception.

We could go on and on about all the things that the school does and we hope to share more inner workings with you every term. Please check the school website regularly and if you have any queries, or would like to join the Governing Board, please speak to a member of the office staff who will be more than happy to help.
