Our Nursery Curriculum
Statutory Requirements
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes. There are core documents produced nationally to support us in meeting the requirements. They are available to download below:
What does this look like at Hylton Red House Nursery School?
We use the EYFS to guide our planning for children across the 7 areas of learning.
Staff use support documents such as Birth to 5 Matters to help make assessment judgements against children's development.
We assess children (with the help of families) to see what they can already do when they join us. We use this as a starting point for our planning.
Our curriculum intent is linked to our Core Values. Our curriculum model is influenced and informed by early years research. Within this model we deliver learning experiences for children in 3 key ways:
Routines:
Our daily routines are carefully planned to ensure that children have the opportunity to repeat and revisit their learning over time. The familiarity of the routines help children to settle quickly and help them to begin to understand the passage of time and what is going to happen across the day.
Daily Adult Focussed Activities:
Children experience structured learning experiences in small groups, and during continuous provision as enhancements. These experiences are planned in response to the children's needs following observations from staff. The experiences often link to the interests children have, as a motivator for further investigation. There are also core experiences for all children that happen every day.
Continuous Provision:
Children have daily opportunities to play for extended periods of time. During this free-play, children can explore the environment and resources at their own pace, whilst staff skilfully extend their knowledge and challenge their thinking. There are parts of the provision that stay the same all year round, and there are 'enhancements' that are added at particular times as provocations for learning.
